Original Prompt: Taken from "Society Page Seduction by Maureen Child": Millionaire Simon Pearce’s bride to be left him standing at the altar and wedding planner Megan Ashton was dumbfounded when she was asked to fill in. Be Simon’s bride. For a year. What better way to escape her situation than by marrying a gorgeous, powerful stranger?
Summary: Millionaire John Watson’s bride to be left him standing at the altar. Wedding planner Sherlaine Harris—secretly male consulting detective Sherlock Holmes—was dumbfounded when asked to fill in. Be John’s wife. For a year. What better way to escape his situation than by marrying a handsome, intriguing stranger? (The original title didn't work for the fic I ended up writing)
Author's Notes: Short chapter this time, but it's more of a connecting the dots chapter, anyhow. The next chapter is f'ing huge, because it's several way too short chapters like this one, all smished together.

Ch 4 – The Event Planner
The smooth story of a burst water pipe on the floor above The Science of Celebration’s office had been entirely false, of course. There was simply no way to explain away an elder brother with far too much intrusive interest in the life of his sibling. Even less possible when said brother’s methods of ‘keeping in touch’ meant surveillance via co-opted CCTV feeds on the streets and via tiny devices planted in his younger brother’s flat. The bugging of Sherlaine’s old flat had been almost de rigeur, but on the very morning of that meeting, three bugs had turned up in Sherlaine’s tasteful, well-placed, and hard-won new office suite in Old Montague Place; without taking hours to do a thorough sweep, it was impossible to have the meeting there.
Not that Sherlaine Harris was doing anything illegal, nor anything immoral—unless one was an utterly uptight old-fashioned prude or simply an intolerant, controlling snob—but the past was littered with a couple of rather large mistakes that had apparently stuck so firmly in a certain overbearing elder sibling’s mind that he could see no new data beyond the mental roadblock they’d caused in his otherwise fairly rational mind.
The hard facts of the matter were that Sherlaine Harris had once been a useful disguise for necessary purposes, then an entertaining way to get away from everything without being recognised, and eventually a strangely fascinating exploration of inner self and unexpected desires.
The man beneath the clever illusion of the woman had no interest in hormones to change the topography of his body, nor in surgically changing his sex; and, though he was homosexual, he was quite happy interacting with sexual partners in clothing socially labelled as ‘male clothing’, as a rule. The differences in approaches and essential behaviours when he wore his ‘female clothing’ was rather fascinating on scientific and cultural-anthropological levels, but the Sherlaine Harris persona had always been secondary to his ‘normal’ self.
That is, secondary until the focus of his life dramatically and tragically changed; after which, being Sherlaine Harris became a means to creating his own independence in a field where there might be ‘killer’ deadlines and seemingly impossible goals, but where no one was actually in danger of being literally killed if he made an error in his job; the consequences would be meted out in a monetary arena, rather than actual physical harm to himself or others.
Oh, he would more than likely go back to what he did best, what he had loved—still loved, deep down—eventually, but for now, this was what he needed. He’d just needed an escape from the unique job he’d once loved the most, before he fell back into very bad old habits, and it was working.
Running The Science of Celebration and being Sherlaine Harris had distracted him, saved him from himself, and had been allowing him the distance he needed from his other, original life. This was something his know-it-all, intrusive elder brother just wouldn’t understand, and he had no intention of willingly sharing anything about this new, re-imagined life and profession with that prig of a sibling.
Sherlaine Harris and The Science of Celebration were his and he was determined to make them work on his own terms. By the time he’d been contacted by Mary Morstan as a potential client, he’d more than a dozen various successful events under his belt as Sherlaine Harris for The Science Of Celebration, and his confidence in his alternate persona and profession had grown immensely.
It was frustrating and a bit ominous to have discovered that his elder brother was intruding into his new life on the very day of that meeting with Miss Morstan; he only hoped it wouldn’t lead to something worse.
